Lavender Oil

Lavandula Angustifolia

People usually associate lavender with its fragrance and its color. Lavandula species are mainly grown for their essential oils, which are used in perfumery, cosmetics, food processing and aromatherapy products. Although genus Lavandula include tens of different species rare to common starting from L.pubescens, L.coronopifolia, L.dhofarensis, also very well-known of them are L.dentata (French Lavender), L.latifolia (portuguese Lavender), L.stoechas (mediterranean Lavender) and among them the most popular one is Lavandula Angustifolia, because it contains lower camphor levels compared to other Lavenders.

Generally, high quality lavender essential oil contains high levels of linalool and linalyl acetate, but the scent of essential oil deteriorates as the camphor content increases.

Lavandula Angustifolia (formerly L.officinalis), also known as True lavender or English Lavender despite it is native to Mediterranean countries; Spain, Italy, Turkey, etc. L.Angustifolia likes the mediterranean climate (dry summers and warm, wet winters), it consumes very low water and likes drained lands.

Extraction of essential oil is performed by distillation of fresh stem flowers, dried stem flowers or dried stemless flowers in water. The chemical constitution can vary, with the aromatic oil of L.Angustifolia derived but in any case essential oil is rich in linalool, linalyl acetate, lavendul acetate, 4-terpineol and also contains caffeic acid, rosemarinic acid and tannin.

Due to the relaxing and calming effects, L.Angustifolia essential oil is commonly used in sleep disorders and weak anxiety disorders. Benefits in nervous complaints is supported by both traditional experimental data and scientific articles. Furthermore, some articles talk about the anticonvulsant and neural regenerative effects of L.Angustifolia. In the food industry, L.Angustifolia has a great potential. It has a wide spectrum of benefits such as being a natural preservative for food, nourishing with minerals Ca, Fe, K, Mg, S and balancing cholesterol in blood. Essential oil is also used against meteorism and peptic complaints traditionally.

External use of essential oil has been approved to stimulate wound healing by Commission E. Many other scientific articles show that L.Angustifolia essential oil has antibacterial and antifungal effects. Even, it has a potential use as a natural herbicide agent without harming the environment.
